Photo stacking - saving the product

Running Win7 64 bit - Phtotoshop C6 cc

I'm fumbling around (first time trying stacking) with photo stacking of macro shots and have gotten my first stacked product completed...Apparently by default PS wants to save to *.tif. (The images (5) making up the stack are all sony raw *.arw).  So when I try to save I'm told the file is over 2 GB. That seems awfully enormouse for something made up of 5 - 21mb photos.

I'm thinking I've done something wrong.

I'm following the instructions here:

http://digital-photography-school.com/how-to-focus-stack-macro-images- using-photoshop

Although not using anywhere near the number of stack members that he is.

So, I used 5 images, each around 21mb... should it end up at 2gb after aligning and blending 5 layers?

I went ahead and changed the save to PSD before saving, and still ended up with 1.25 GB.  Still a mighty large file.

Any experienced photo stackers present that can say if this is normal... or what to save as, or any other coaching that seems to bear on this.
